Prospects for Restorative Justice Practices in Odisha discussed at seminar held by SNEH

Bhubaneswar(11/01/2025): The Society for Nature, Education, and Health (SNEH) organised a program on Restorative Justice on Saturday at SAMPRITI- the organization's peace training-cum-resource and research center in Bhubaneswar.
The program was inaugurated by esteemed guests: Biswajeet Mohapatra, Retired District Judge attended as the Guest of Honour.
SNEH’s President, Subarna Ghosh welcomed the participants.
A diverse audience of 30 civil society members attended the workshop, including senior police officers, human rights officers, advocates, and social workers, members of the Judiciary, educationists, human rights activists, and journalists.
Chief Speaker at the program Dr Bijoy Chandra Mohapatra, advocated for Restorative Justice as a means to address these challenges, highlighting its potential for prisoner reformation and community integration.
This program aims to raise awareness among civil society members about the principles and benefits of Restorative Justice. During the program, Biswajeet Mohapatra, Former District Judge emphasized the importance of this method to resolve compoundable matters. Subas Panda, Advisor, SNEH, elucidated SNEH's ongoing interventions in the Salia Sahi slum.
He highlighted its focus on offender rehabilitation, victim restoration, and community reconciliation, for which SNEH is actively lobbying for a Restorative Justice Bench in local Police Station.
Also, two trained women peace leaders from the slum shared their experiences and success stories.
An open session facilitated by Subas Panda, held discussions on various aspects of Restorative Justice and its integration into the existing justice delivery system.
It was a collaborative effort facilitated by SNEH’s President, Subarna Ghosh, and conducted by Dibakar Mahali, Coordinator of the Restorative Justice Project, and Team SNEH. The program is supported by the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), Kolkata.
