Bhubaneswar (11/12/2024):
India’s agricultural landscape is deeply intertwined with livestock farming, a lifeline for millions of smallholder farmers.
With the country leading global milk production, livestock plays a pivotal role in ensuring food security and supplementing incomes.
However, the sector faces numerous challenges, including disease outbreaks, high production costs, and inadequate veterinary services, which hinder the productivity of rural farmers.
In Odisha, where agriculture and allied activities dominate rural livelihoods, livestock farming is an integral part of household economies.
Despite its potential, farmers often struggle with low yields and financial stress, navigating a bunch of issues with limited resources.
Yet, even amidst these challenges, stories of hope and transformation emerge, thanks to timely interventions and the dedication of organizations like the Reliance Foundation.
One such story is that of Anupama Pradhan, a determined farmer from Hatianali village in Odisha’s Angul district.
Her inspiring journey of resilience and success serves as a beacon for many.
Anupama’s Dream: From Struggles to Success-At 38 years old, Anupama manages her household of five while pursuing integrated farming on her modest 0.5-acre plot.
Her livelihood depends on a mix of paddy and vegetable cultivation alongside livestock rearing, which includes a Red Sindhi cow, two bullocks, and four Black Bengal goats.
However, her path was far from easy.
Anupama’s livestock often suffered from diseases like Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), and her cow’s milk yield was consistently low.
The loss of two goats to illness left her disheartened and on the verge of abandoning animal husbandry.
Her turning point came in January 2022 when she connected with the Reliance Foundation (RF) Information Services toll free helpline number 1800 419 8800.
The guidance she received marked the beginning of a transformative journey.
The Reliance Foundation Intervention-
The RF helpline introduced Anupama to the Digital Farm School, an initiative that empowers farmers through expert advice and knowledge-sharing platforms.
Using tools like audio advisories, interactive phone-in programs, and community WhatsApp groups, she began to learn about best practices for livestock care.
A significant breakthrough occurred in July 2023 when Reliance Foundation organized an animal health camp in her village.
The camp provided free vaccinations and veterinary medicines for her livestock.
This intervention boosted her confidence and reaffirmed her decision to continue livestock farming.
In April 2024, when her cow developed a sore udder and milk production dropped drastically, Anupama once again turned to the RF helpline.
Following the expert recommendations, her cow recovered within a week, and milk production doubled to 10 liters per day.
This drastic improvement effectively doubled her income.
A Journey of Transformation-
Armed with knowledge and confidence, Anupama began to adopt best practices in animal health management, feed optimization, and disease prevention.
Her hard work and perseverance paid off, bringing remarkable changes to her farm:
The increase in milk production significantly boosted her monthly income, rising from Rs 6,000 to Rs 15,000.
Improved care for her goats enhanced their health, enabling her to earn an additional Rs 30,000 annually.
Integrated farming practices allowed her to balance agriculture and livestock, fostering self-reliance and sustainability.
Anupama’s success story has inspired many in her community to seek guidance from the RF helpline and adopt similar practices.
Anupama’s Reflections…
Reflecting on her journey, Anupama shares,
"Earlier, I faced so many challenges—animal health was the biggest issue, and expert guidance was hard to find.
Reliance Foundation’s Digital Farm School and helpline gave me the knowledge and confidence to overcome these hurdles.
Today, my farm sustains my family, and I feel proud of what I’ve achieved."
Anupama’s story is a snapshot of the broader challenges and opportunities in India’s livestock sector.
Nationally, the sector contributes 4.5% to the GDP, with India producing a staggering 221 million tonnes of milk annually.
In Odisha, the state’s 2.5 million tonnes of annual milk production supports numerous rural households, but access to quality veterinary care, feed, and market linkages remains a pressing concern.
Organizations like Reliance Foundation play a crucial role in bridging these gaps, enabling farmers to overcome obstacles and achieve better outcomes.
A Lifeline for Livelihoods-
The story of Anupama Pradhan is a testament to the transformative power of knowledge and timely support.
Her journey from struggle to success showcases how initiatives like the Reliance Foundation’s helpline and Digital Farm School can empower farmers to rewrite their destinies.
Anupama’s resilience and achievements inspire a vision of a future where every farmer has access to the resources and guidance they need to thrive.
By strengthening rural livelihoods, her story reinforces the idea that even the most daunting challenges can become opportunities for growth and progress, paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous agricultural sector.
