Webinar on No Tobacco Day

Bhubaneswar(31/05/2022): In order to build a Tobacco Free Odisha and India everyone must work together.
Extensive opinions have been made to raise mass awareness along with strong implementation of COTPA act. The above opinion has been made by experts on a webinar organised on the occasion of No tobacco day by one of the leading CSO of the state PECUC, ECOSAVERS Youth Network & Coalition for Tobacco Free Odisha.
The webinar was moderated by Stuti Ranjan Pradhan, President of ECOSAVERS youth network.
Ranjan Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, PECUC said that one life is lost every one minute due to tobacco consumption.
There are above 4000 harmful chemicals present in the cigarette which is affecting not only the user but also affecting other in the surroundings more.
Now tobacco is becoming big threat for the safety of the environment.
To have a healthy environment total ban of tobacco is needed as well as increasing the age of selling of products to the persons from 18 to 21 years, Mohanty said.
Deepak Mishra, Environmental Expert said that if the cultivation of the tobacco is replaced with the food crops, then 10-12 million people can be supplied with food.
Cultivation of tobacco leaves is not only spoiling the fertility of the soil but also causing ground water depletion.
5% of the total deforestation is caused globally due to tobacco cultivation.
Mishra said that E-cigarette is becoming a major threat to sea environment.
Dr.S.K.Swain, NCD, Nodal Officer, Government of Odisha said that 95% of the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) is caused by tobacco consumption.
About 63% NCD death is caused due to Tobacco consumption only.
He stressed on extensive sensitisation to keep the children away from tobacco from very small age.
Anuradha Mohanty, Executive Director, PECUC expressed looking at the severity of the Tobacco Consumption that COTPA to be strictly implemented along with mass sensitisation.
Participants from different parts of Odisha shared their ideas as well as raised their concerns in the webinar.
