Bhubaneswar(31/05/2021): Tobacco causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
It also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the immune system, speakers said on the occasion of observation of “World No Tobacco Day 2021” organized on virtual platform by People’s Cultural Centre (PECUC), a leading voluntary organisation of Odisha in collaboration of Rotary Club of Unique, Bhubaneswar.
Ranjan Kumar Mohanty, Secretary PECUC gave the introductory remark and shared the purpose of this programme and also chaired the programme.
He said, “More than 13 lakh of people are dying due to use of tobacco every year in India and it is spreading like an epidemic and entangling the youth of India in it clutches.
Massive awareness is necessary to reduce the use of tobacco.”
Joining as guest speakers Rotarian & famous Eye Specialist Dr.Saroj Kumar Tripathy, said that use of tobacco affects the all organs of our body.
It reduces our lung capacity and makes us prone to all types of respiratory diseases.
People using tobacco are more vulnerable to the diseases like COVID19.
It slowly destroys all our vital organs of the body that is stomach, hearts, eyes etc.
Dr.Swaroop Mohanty, dental expert said that for getting temporary pleasure of smoking or tobacco use we should not damage our valuable health as tobacco use is one of the major cause of deadly diseases like mouth cancer, lung cancer, heart diseases etc.
He said through awareness, education we can bring psychosocial and behavioural changes among tobacco users.
Dr.Minakhi Panda, Chairmen, PECUC spoke on the socio economic impact of tobacco use on the society as a whole and said we all should commit to bring changes in the mindset of the tobacco users.
Among others social activists Pradeep Kumar Behera, Usharani Behera and Sukanta Nayak also spoke on this occasion.
