World No Tobacco Day observed

Bhubaneswar(01/06/2023): Tobacco has now become a major threat to public health.
It is one of the major causes of death and disease in India and accounts for nearly 1.35 million deaths every year.
India is also the second largest consumer and producer of tobacco.
Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke kill about 1.2 million Indians each year.
India accounts for 70% of the global burden of smokeless tobacco.
Smokeless tobacco use kills over 230,000 Indians each year.
Nearly 90% of oral cancers in India are attributable to smokeless tobacco use.
Bidi and cigarette smokers die 6 to 10 years earlier than their non-smoking counterparts.
27% of all cancers in India are attributable to tobacco use. To improve public health by reducing tobacco use and pursuing the goal of a tobacco-free society People’s Cultural Centre (PECUC) in collaboration with Royal College of Science and Technology & Coalition for Tobacco Free Odisha organised a student & youth convention on the occasion of “World No Tobacco Day” at the Royal College of Science and Technology, Rasulgarh, Bhubaneswar with the presence of more than 500 students and youth.
Ranjan Kumar Mohanty, Secretary PECUC spoke about various features of the COTPA.
He encouraged youth to come forward and take the lead for creating a tobacco-free society.
Dr.Bishnu Mohan Mohanty, Chairman, the Royal College of Science and Technology, advised the youth to stay away from tobacco use and also to work for a tobacco free society.
Anuradha Mohanty, Executive Director of PECUC spoke about the role of youth and student in making Odisha tobacco free.
Satyashiv Rath, Project Coordinator spoke about health risk associated with tobacco use.
The students and young people along with the participants also took an oath for working for a tobacco-free society.
The programme was facilitated by Alpana Das, Jyotishankar Mohanty, Harihar Balabantary of PECUC.
On this occasion, youth and student volunteers along with traffic volunteers wearing T-Shirts with various messages of World No Tobacco Day managed the traffic.
This was jointly organised by Health and Family Welfare department of Govt.
of Odisha, Commissionarate Police of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar and PECUC.
In the operational areas of PECUC rallies, messaging, paintings and meetings were organised with the participation of youth, women and children for generating awareness for creating a tobacco-free society .
